Pre-Prosthetic Surgery

Pre-prosthetic surgery refers to any type of oral surgery that helps prepare your mouth for future restoration. Dentures and other oral prostheses are designed to rest on the bony ridge of the mouth, and they act as functional tooth replacements. In order for dentures to fit comfortably, pre-prosthetic surgery ensures the shape and size of the teeth are maintained for a comfortable and secure fit.

The Process of Pre-Prosthetic Surgery

During your first visit, we will take 3D CBCT scans of your mouth to get a clear understanding of your condition and the structure of your teeth. We will also discuss your anesthesia and sedation options to consider during treatment so that you can be comfortable and at ease during any procedure. Our office also utilizes advanced sterilization equipment for our surgical instruments, which reduces the risk of cross-contamination.

Pre-prosthetic surgery may include smoothing or reshaping the jaw bone, removing excess bone or gum tissue, tooth extractions, or reducing the bony ridge in your mouth (ridge augmentation). The details of your exact treatment will be determined upon your personal needs and the type of oral prosthesis you plan to have. All of these procedures are performed in the safety and comfort of our Naperville, IL, office.

Non-Surgical Tooth Replacement Options

Bridges

One or more missing teeth can be replaced using a fixed, tooth-supported bridge. This tooth replacement option literally bridges the gap created by missing teeth. This is a great option for patients who are not candidates for dental implants but would still like a non-removable, natural-looking solution. Benefits of bridges include:

  • Secure and non-removable
  • Improve eating function and facial appearance
  • Affixed to existing teeth
  • Natural-looking results

Full or Partial Dentures

Many patients turn to dentures to restore their smile. However, they are often thought to be clunky and cumbersome. Some people tolerate dentures well, while others find it embarrassing to have to remove them while eating and brushing. For most, a permanent option is preferred with the All-on-4® treatment concept. For others, dentures are their ideal option. After you are fitted for your dentures, we will perform pre-prosthetic surgery, if necessary, to ensure your dentures fit comfortably and won’t slide around in your mouth. Benefits of dentures include:

  • Replace a few missing teeth or an entire arch of teeth
  • Removable
  • Improve eating function
  • Last for a while, but require replacement every few years
